Brookline culinary ambassador Julia Goldberg is offering a walking tour that highlights the town’s rapidly growing Russian food scene.“After the Soviet Union collapsed, about 100,000 Russian Jews came to the Boston area,” said Goldberg, a native of St. Petersburg, Russia. “About 10 percent of the population of Brighton and Brookline speak Russian.”
Goldberg’s tour makes six stops, including the Babushka and Russian Village delicatessens. Along the way you’ll learn some Russian gastronomic lore, and sample Russian specialties. The tour ends with a vodka tasting at The Fireplace in Washington Square.Tours are conducted in Russian and in English. Goldberg also offers a walking tour of Kosher Brookline. RUSSIAN VILLAGE DELI’S BEEF STROGANOFF
1 T. sunflower oil 2-3 lbs. beef Salt to taste 1 onion, sliced Flour 3-4 T. sour cream Cut meat into slices approximately 2 to 3 inches long and 1/2 inch wide. Season with salt. Fry onion over medium-high heat until it turns golden. Add meat, and cook over high heat 5 to 7 minutes. Dust meat with flour, then add sour cream and mix well. Cook over low heat, or bake at 250 to 300 degrees, for 4 minutes. Serve with mashed potatoes. | | |
